Welcome to the home of two great golf books - Cruel School

& Ryder Cup Revealed

Cruel School is just the latest golf book from the pen of Ross Biddiscombe

Cruel School is the fourth golf book penned by Ross Biddiscombe and took over a year to write, climaxing with a trip to the 2015 Q School Final Stage at PGA Catalunya near Girona in northern Spain.

“If you haven’t attended Q School, from First Stage to Final Stage, then you’ll never fully understand the heartache of missing out on a Tour Card or the exhilaration of winning one under the most intense pressure that golf can provide.”

Cruel School features the successful Q School visit of current top 60 European Tour star Chris Wood (below) in 2008.

The book also features current top 19 European Tour senior golfer Phil Golding and Guy Woodman, the only British star of the American TV hit show, The Big Break.

The latest book comes just 18 months after Ross’s previous success, Ryder Cup Revealed Tales of the Unexpected that is on sale via Amazon and other book sales websites.

The critics have praised Ross Biddiscombe’s Q School books for almost a decade:

Cruel School: The 40-Year History of Golf’s European Tour Q School is a fascinating new book to be published next month (December) celebrating the 40th anniversary of one of golf’s most compelling tournaments. To read an excerpt, click here now.

Written by best-selling sports author Ross Biddiscombe, Cruel School charts the rising importance of this annual, end-of-season event that can make or break the tour aspirations of even the best golfers. “When the PGA Tour’s Q School in America stopped offering direct entry to main tour events in 2013, the European Tour’s School became the biggest and most important qualifying tournament in world golf,” says Biddiscombe, “and a book to mark the 40th anniversary underlines its importance.”

Having spent the better part of a decade following the Q School, Biddiscombe is a proven expert having written news stories, features, blogs and two books about the European Tour’s version of the tournament that was first staged in 1976.

Biddiscombe’s two previous books, both under the name Golf On The Edge, were published in 2008 and 2009 respectively and focus on the struggles of journeymen golfers who are regular visitors to the Q School such as current Senior Tour star Phil Golding who made 19 visits, the most by any British pro. Cruel School brings together the remarkable research of Golf on the Edge with fresh interviews and new elements. Details of how players such as Colin Montgomerie, Ian Poulter, Jose Maria Olazabal and others progressed through Q School during the last four decades makes compelling reading.

Cruel School: The 40-Year History of Golf’s European Tour Q School is available both in paperback and eBook formats. Go to www.amazon.co.uk.

Starting in 2005, the European Tour Qualifying School took over my life. I was searching for a topic appropriate for my first golf book and I remembered reading a fascinating feature about the Q School in a long-forgotten issue of The Observer sports magazine. However, I could neither find the issue nor much of anything else about this end-of-season tournament where the fringe players from the Tour meet up with the new young pretenders and they all fight it out for a tiny number of Tour Cards for the following year, basically invitations to The Big Show where millionaires and reputations are made.

Undeterred, I decided to attend a First Stage Q School event at The Oxfordshire Golf Club the following September. There I found no pressroom or press, a small handful of spectators and little interest among the greater golfing community.
